Is there a reason why you don't use the external repository as remote, and then add the remote as subtree?
git remote add -f tpope-vim-fireplace https://github.com/tpope/vim-f...
git subtree add --prefix .vim/bundle/tpope-vim-fireplace tpope-vim-fireplace
master --squash
This way, you don't need to remember the URL for the next time, but can just fetch from the remote instead:
git fetch tpope-vim-surround master
git subtree pull --prefix .vim/bundle/tpope-vim-surround tpope-vim-surround master --squash
...
